At times strategy, defence and all out war game, Wizard Battle is simple and thorough.
Offering no back story, Wizard Battle simply gives you one instruction: The goal is to get your Wizard to the other side of the field. A handful of instructions later and you are dropped in an open field where no cover can be found and an attacking army headed your way.
In simple terms, this game rocks. It’s basic, it’s simple, it’s whatever you want to call it. Behind the blocky graphics and minimalist game play is a wholly structured and enjoyable world. The secret to the game is to build up points. To get points, have a soldier reach the other side of the map. If he does so, you get twice what you payed for him. Repeatedly scoring points can give you an army the likes of which has never been seen before. A large army is what you will need to get your Wizard safely across the opposing army’s barrier.
At first, the game is seemingly random. You can place whichever soldiers you like wherever you like and it doesn’t seem to make much difference. However, quickly you will learn that if you make mistakes and let the enemy get ahead, chances of survival are minimal. You will need to develop a good strategy for early point scoring and maintain that lead for victory.
After all this planning and battling, the pay off you get from victory seems a little bit of a rip off. But therein lays its charm. I won’t tell you what its like to win, except to say that the satisfaction you get from knowing you’ve won is more than anything the game could ever give to you. Thoroughly enjoyable.
