DoomRL, which stands for Doom Rogue Like is a text based “adventure game” which is set in the Doom universe. If you don’t know what “Rogue” is like, check out the recently reviewed NetHack for a little peek. If you already have and it confused you greatly, have no fear! There are no Amulets of Yendor in this game. No crazy quests to fulfil for no reason. It’s just like Doom – you’re trapped in Hell and you blast away horrible monsters with any weapon available.
Of course, it just so happens that in this text-based adaptation of Doom, the horrible slimy monsters are represented by the letter ‘h’ and so forth, but that doesn’t make them less frightening or deadly. Coming at you with a fierce voracity and a near un-ending supply of hunger for your mortal soul, you will find yourself trapped many-a-time before getting the hang of it.
Fortunately, in this game (which sets it apart from its more well known contemporaries) is its length is shorter, much shorter; its goals are clearer and its dungeons easily manoeuvrable. In short, it’s a heck of a lot easier than NetHack ever could be. For the novice, DoomRL provides an entry-level playing field in the genre. For the experienced, it provides a lunch hour’s worth of game play. Whatever your skill set, it's an enjoyable game which is easy to return to.
